InfraRed Systems & TalkPerfect Intercom Integration in The Embassy of Ireland

Since the year 2000, Ireland has opened a resident embassy in Singapore and for a period of 24 years, it has been located in Liat Towers and in 2024, the Embassy of Ireland in Singapore has relocated to a new location at 18 Cross Street.

For the preparation works of their new office, the Embassy has reached out to Spectrum Audio Visual, with the task to implement the required Audio-Visual integration Systems and a part of the requirement includes Hearing Enhancement System. Spectrum reached out to The Listening Lab to help with the implementation of Counter Loop Systems in the Embassy’s Reception Counter and Interview Room and also InfraRed (IR) Systems for their Meeting Rooms.

InfraRed (IR) Hearing Enhancement solutions uses InfraRed light to transmit sounds. A transmitter converts sound into a light signal and beams it to a receiver that is worn by a listener in which it decodes the IR signal back to sound for listening.

Hearing aid or cochlear implant users are able to enjoy the benefits of an IR system by utilizing an external neckloop, connected to a receiver, to convert the signal into magnetic field which will be picked up by the telecoil component in their Hearing Aids or Cochlear Implants.

Unlike induction loop or FM Systems, IR Systems uses line-of-sight as a reference point, furthermore, IR signals cannot pass through walls, making it particularly effective in courtrooms or secure meeting rooms where confidentiality is key. However, the downside to an IR System is that it is not effective in environments where there are too many competing light sources such as the outdoors or strongly lit rooms.

Since the Embassy has Meeting Rooms, sensitive information will most likely be discussed and any leak that can be heard outside of the rooms will be a breach in privacy. Hence, this is where the IR System solution works best to ensure that conversations held in the rooms, stays within the four walls.

Last but not least, the Counter Induction Loops installed at the Reception Counter and Interview Room are seamlessly integrated with Ampetronic’s TalkPerfect Intercom Systems comprising of a client-side glass-mount microphone that has a directional pickup feature which reduces background noise and increases the gain before feedback and also a Combi Mic/Speaker for the Embassy staff.

The Combi Mic/Speaker eliminates the inconvenience of having to use 2 separate mics, one for the Intercom System and the other for the Induction Loop System. On top of that, this reduces the footprint of having a separate speaker, giving a more appealing set up. The Combi Mic/Speaker will serve both the speaker on the client’s side as well as the Counter Induction Loop.

This solution was brought to light as the Reception Counter and the Interview Room, where the Embassy’s staff and the client will be, are separated by a thick glass panel and normal communication would be deemed ineffective.

Hearing Aid or Cochlear Implant users that have the Telecoil component pre-installed can benefit from the IR System by activating their Telecoil Function and wearing a Neckloop, connected to an IR Receiver. While at the Reception Counter and Interview Room, they may do the same, less the Neckloop and IR Receiver.
